May 2026 – Music Moments

Hip, hip, hooray—I LOVE May!

I might be a little biased (thanks to Mother’s Day, Teacher Appreciation Week, and my birthday!), but it really is such a celebratory month. 🎉

May is also packed with fun themes: Star Wars Day, Cinco de Mayo, National Tap Dancing Day, and, of course, Memorial Day. I shared more about those in last year’s post be sure to check it out for even more ideas!

This year, my mind is a bit up in the clouds. Above, even!

  • May kicks off with “May the 4th be with you” (Star Wars Day ✨)
  • We’ve all been amazed (amaze, amaze, amaze!) watching the Artemis II space launches and mission
  • The recent space-themed movie Hail Mary Project has fantastic themes and music to offer
  • And… we are getting ready to PRE-LAUNCH the (drum-roll, please) Little Kiddos Music™ Preschool Music Video Curriculum 🎥

So yes… I’ve got out-of-this-world music on my mind—and I can’t wait to share it with you!

An Out-of-This-World Learning Experience

Each of the 40 video classes inside the Little Kiddos Music Academy curriculum is built around a theme children LOVE—including Outer Space! 🚀

🎥 A 25–30 minute guided music lesson

In the Outer Space preschool music class, we sing a variety of engaging, space-themed songs while moving like blasting rocket ships and floating astronauts.

We use the words MOON and ROCKET as rhythm patterns, helping young learners connect language and music in a meaningful, hands-on way.

Breaking words into sounds supports early literacy development, while simultaneously teaching rhythm, beat, and musical patterns— a powerful combination for young learners!

Each class also includes 3 engaging printables:

  • A Caregiver Guide with tips and extension activities
  • A Coloring & Lyrics Sheet for singing + creativity
  • Rockin’ Rhythms to help children compose their own patterns

The Benefits of Rhythm Sticks = Out of this 🌍!

Rhythm sticks are one of the most versatile instruments you can use with young children. I LOVE them (as my Mini-Ted Talk on Rhythm Sticks) proves!

In our Outer Space class, in the song, Zoom, Zoom, Zoom My Rocket Ship, they become rocket ships launching and taking us on a musical adventure.

And beyond the fun, they’re building:
✔ Bilateral coordination
✔ Rhythm skills
✔ Sensory awareness
✔ Real music vocabulary

And, while not specifically outer space-themed, our Transportation Rap is another fun example of just how fun preschool rhythm stick-play can be!

Why Rhythm Sticks Are One of the BEST Instruments for Kids: In brief, they are a simple, affordable, and incredibly powerful music instrument for early childhood music learning. They rock!

PRO TIP! One smooth stick + one textured stick = even more sensory input and engagement!

I recently shared my Top 4 Instruments for Toddlers & Preschoolers, and, of course, rhythm sticks absolutely made the list!

I have a FREE PRINTABLE when you SUBSCRIBE that covers easy ways to incorporate these instruments at home!

May Music Appreciation for FOR EARS OF ALL AGES:

Here are a few of my favorite listening picks this month. These are perfect for expanding your child’s musical world!

🎧 Youth Orchestra of Bahia

I am OVER THE MOON about this group of young musicians (based out of Northeastern Brazil). As someone who feels called to spread JOY through music— this is it! Pure joy.

(And if anyone says classical music is boring… show them this! 😉)

🎧 Erratic Maneuver Detected – Daniel Pemberton

Project Hail Mary—have you seen the movie? Based on the science fiction novel (that kiddo #1 and I listened to while driving him to college in San Diego), it is a ridiculous fun, exciting, and heart-string pulling movie.

While watching it in the theater, I was completely mesmerized by this percussive masterpiece! OBSESSED. My family has been listening to it in the mornings to get energized for the day.

🎧 Jupiter & Mars, The Planets – Gustav Holst

I’ve shared these before, and I will share them again. I don’t care! Listen to them often and regularly, please and thank you.

👉 Jupiter, Bringer of Jolity

👉 Mars, Bringer of War

🎧 Star Wars – John Williams

Watching John Williams conduct is magical!

👉Main Theme (A New Hope)

👉Duel of the Fates (The Phantom Menace) My personal favorite!

And, boy, would so many of them go perfectly hand-in-hand with… 👉 Little Kiddos Music™ Preschool Music Video Curriculum.

🪐 Rock Your Homeschool

Amy Milcic of Rock Your Homeschool has an entire collection of free Star Wars-themed activities for at-home learning and fun!

May the 4th be with you! (And, for the Catholics in the crowd, we want to respond, “And with your spirit!” 😉 )

🚀 Build & Launch a Rocket

Use paper towel tubes, paper, and tape to create a rocket—then “launch” it while playing some of the music appreciation suggestions!
