April 2026 – Music Moments
I started out last month’s blog lamenting that winter passed us by without any snow. Well… careful what you wish for!
In mid-March—just as the cherry trees were nearing peak bloom—we got a surprise snowstorm here in the Seattle area. There I was, happily singing about springtime and flowers… while we were suddenly back in a winter wonderland!
Thankfully, that wacky weather is behind us now.
Spring is in full bloom, and April is the perfect time to bring fresh energy, movement, and joyful learning into your little one’s day through music!
At Little Kiddos Music Academy, we believe that music isn’t just something children listen to—it’s something they experience with their whole bodies. Through singing, movement, and simple instruments, children build foundational skills that support language, coordination, focus, and confidence.
If you’re looking for simple, meaningful ways to incorporate music at home or in the classroom this month, here are some of my favorite April-inspired ideas 🌸
🌷 Movement Songs That Build Coordination🌷
Preschoolers learn best when their bodies are involved. April is the perfect time to take advantage of that natural energy.
Incorporate songs that include:
- Marching
- Stretching
- Twisting
- Clapping patterns
✔ Builds motor skills
✔ Develops body awareness
✔ Strengthens rhythm and timing
🌱Grow With the Music (High & Low Pitch Exploration)
Spring is all about growth—which makes it the perfect time to explore pitch (high and low sounds) in a way children can see and feel.
Try this:
- Start crouched down low like a tiny seed
- Slowly “grow” taller as the melody moves up the scale
- Reach up tall for high notes ☀️
- Return down low as the melody descends
This full-body experience helps children internalize pitch, rather than just hearing it.
💡 Why it matters: Understanding pitch lays the foundation for singing in tune, listening skills, and early musical awareness.
🎶 The Beauty of Recognizable Melodies
Did you know using a familiar melody helps children learn music faster?
This flower seed movement song is set to Mary Had a Little Lamb—which means kids can focus on matching pitch, learning musical patterns, and understanding high vs. low sounds instead of trying to learn a brand-new tune.
🌸 When children already know the melody:
✔ They match pitch more easily
✔ They learn words faster
✔ They build confidence singing
✔ They develop stronger listening skills
✔ They connect movement to melody (hello, full-body learning!)
🐷 Farm Fun: Spring Animal Songs & Music Play
Flowers and spring showers are definitely two of our favorite April themes—but don’t forget… spring is also the PERFECT time to explore all the new life around the farm!
Last year, I shared some of our favorite farm animal songs and music activities—be sure to check it out for even more ideas.
Music Appreciation for FOR EARS OF ALL AGES:
April is Jazz Appreciation Month (one of my favorite genres of music!), so I love including a mix of jazz and nature-inspired classical pieces this time of year.
🎧 I’ll Remember April – Chet Baker
I’ve been a lifelong Louis Armstrong fan, and I’ll admit—I only recently got more familiar with Chet Baker. I don’t know what took me so long!
🎧 Jardins sous la Pluie – Claude Debussy
April showers! This beautiful piece perfectly captures the feeling of a garden in the rain.
🎧 The Flower Garden – Joe Hisaishi
Japanese composer, Joe Hisaishi, is best known for composing scores for over 100 films. The Flower Garden was featured in the 2004 film, Howl’s Moving Castle.
April STEM & Extension Activities for Preschoolers 🧪🌿
🌸 Color-Changing Flowers
A classic, easy, and so engaging STEM activity! Place white carnations (or celery) in colored water and watch how plants transport water up their stems.
🐦 Build a Bird Nest
Step aside, mud pies! Challenge kiddos to build a bird nest using twigs, grass, and mud—then test if it can hold an “egg” (an egg shaker works perfectly! 😂).
🐰 Peeps Engineering Challenge
Grab some colorful marshmallow bunnies and chicks, plus toothpicks or popsicle sticks, and let kids build:
- Houses
- Bridges
- Catapults
- Teeter-totters
The possibilities are endless—and so fun!
💛 A Gentle Reminder
As parents and caregivers, we put a lot of pressure on ourselves to do everything “right.” But when it comes to enriching our children’s lives—we don’t have to do it perfectly (and we won’t!).
The most important thing is that you show up.
The safe, playful space you create is what allows your child to learn, explore, and grow.
And when it comes to music—you don’t have to be a musician.
Your voice, your presence, and your willingness to play alongside them—that’s what matters most.
Start small. Stay consistent. And most importantly—have fun with it.
