March 2026 – Music Moments
If you’re on the East Coast (or even in parts of the South), you’ve probably been feeling the chill of this long-lasting winter. Here in the Pacific Northwest, winter felt almost skipped this year — just a few snow flurries and nothing that ever stuck. It’s felt like spring has been quietly arriving for weeks!
While I love winter, I’m especially eager for spring this year. I’ve spent many hours indoors editing videos as we prepare to launch the Little Kiddos Music video curriculum — and we are so very close. I’m beyond excited.
St. Patrick’s Day & Irish Music for Preschoolers ☘️
If you’re looking for March music inspiration for preschoolers, you’re in the right place.Last year’s March blog began with my Irish brag (85.6% — and yes, I’ll happily jig about it from the rooftops!).
Be sure to revisit:

You can also explore the updated March Playlist, where I’m already adding new favorites for this year.
One of my favorite March traditions is teaching a simple circle dance I created.
👉 Watch it here: St. Patrick’s Day Dance.
I’ve taught this dance to elementary students for years and can’t wait to try a modified version in my intergenerational music classes this spring. (Ages 1–103 dancing together? Pure joy-filled magic.)
In March classes, we:
- Dance and play instruments to Irish music
- Sing about leprechauns
- Hunt for gold at the ends of rainbows
🌈 Rainbows
Singing about Leprechauns and pots of gold obviously should include some color-themed rainbow songs!

Spring Preschool Songs: Birds, Nature & New Beginnings 🌷🐦
As winter fades, I’ve been inspired by birdsong on our daily walks with Lily Josephine (our mini-goldendoodle who is not, in fact, golden). That inspiration led to this song:
🐦 Do You Hear the Birdies Sing?
I couldn’t help but continue with the birds and springtime themes for our listening suggestions as well as Preschool STEM (and STEAM) activities!
Music Appreciation for FOR EARS OF ALL AGES:
Spring preschool music is such a beautiful way to help children tune into the world around them. This month’s listening suggestions all feature bird-inspired themes — perfect for helping children practice focused listening and pitch recognition.
🎧 Cuckoo in the Depths of the Forest – Camille Saint-Saëns
Listen along with kiddo(s) and echo the repeated cuckoo sound trying to match the two pitches.
🎧 On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring – Frederick Delius
I absolutely love this piece, and while not quite as pronounced as Saint-Saëns’ ode to the bird, you can still hear a repeated two-note bird call pattern woven gently throughout.
🎧 The Lark Ascending – Ralph Vaughan Williams
The initial phrase of an ascending violin certainly makes me think of a bird taking flight on a spring morning.
A Fun Cumulative Favorite for Kids: The Rattlin’ Bog 🎶
And as an homage for music about birds and one that is Irish music and an extra fun piece for kids, I suggest listening toThe Rattlin’ Bog. It is a cumulative song that is a ridiculous amount of fun.
I’m a bit partial to the classic version from the Irish Rovers. 👉The Rattlin’ Bog
And even The Wiggles have a version! 👉 The Rattlin’ Bog
March STEM & Extension Activities for Preschoolers 🧪🌿
🐦 Make a Bird Feeder
Since we clearly have birds on the brain, pair your music listening with hands-on learning.
👉Little Bins – Cardboard Bird Feeder – this is perfect for easy bird watching (and listening!) right outside your window!
You can use:
- A toilet paper tube
- A pinecone
- String and birdseed
Listening to birds + learning about them = beautiful cross-curricular connection.
🐛 Birds & Bugs Creative Play
Birds and bugs go hand-in-hand — and Birds and Bugs is one of the 40 class themes in the Little Kiddos Music video curriculum.
Try this simple activity:
- Use pipe cleaners to twist and combine colors
- Create silly bug creatures
- Identify body parts
- Add googly eyes
It’s fantastic for fine motor skills and imaginative play.
🏨 Build a Bug Hotel
If you want to keep the bugs outside (yes, please!), try building a bug hotel instead of indoor terrariums.
👉Happy Toddler Playtime – Bug Hotel
It’s a wonderful way to:
- Encourage outdoor exploration
- Teach about habitats
- Connect music, science, and nature
March at Little Kiddos Music Academy 💛
March preschool music is full of:
- Irish rhythm and dance
- Rainbow colors
- Bird songs and spring inspiration
- Joyful movement
Whether you’re celebrating St. Patrick’s Day, welcoming spring, or listening for bird calls, I hope this month brings playful music-making and meaningful connection to your home or classroom.
