September 2025 – Music Moments
Ahh, September! The season of back-to-school, new routines, and fresh energy in the preschool classroom. For parents and teachers looking for a September preschool music curriculum, this month is the perfect time to add apple songs, fall rhythm activities, and circle time favorites to your lesson plans. Music helps little ones adjust to routines, build friendships, and celebrate the changing seasons in fun and meaningful ways.
Of course, September also brings that classic fall debate – pumpkin spice too soon, or right on time? (Personally, I vote October!) And here in Seattle, you’ll still see that funny mix of puffer jackets with Birkenstocks as the mornings cool and evenings stay crisp. But no matter the weather, fall preschool music activities are always in season.
Back-to-School Music for Preschoolers
The first days of preschool can bring big feelings for kids (and parents!). Music is a wonderful way to ease transitions and create joyful routines. Check out our playful videos:
- First Day of Preschool Song
- First Day of Kindergarten Song
- A Teacher’s First Day of Kindergarten (Humor!) 😀
Trust me, September is survival mode for many teachers – songs help make it joyful and take the edge off!
September & Fall Preschool Songs
At Little Kiddos Music, our preschoolers sing about apples, leaves, hayrides, and all things fall. Some favorites include:
- A Tiny Little Appleseed
- Leaf songs and rhythm games perfect for circle time such as my biggest hit on TikTok, the Fall version of the The Wheels on the Bus – The Leaves on the Trees
Check out our Preschool Autumn Music Playlist for more fall fun—updated all season long!
New! Preschool Music Curriculum Videos
Exciting news: production has begun on full-length preschool music class videos! I’m teaming up with MFX Studios to create 25-minute guided lessons packed with:
- Original songs
- Movement & rhythm activities
- Instrument play
- Fancy Pants Music Words (my specialty!)
These preschool music curriculum videos will be available soon for both at-home and in-class use. In the meantime, watch for sample lessons and teasers on our YouTube channel.
FOR EARS OF ALL AGES:
Stephanie Leavell is the master of music for kids that doesn’t sound like music for kids and that won’t make parents, caregivers or teachers go crazy! Highly recommend her song Falling Leaf for this time of year!
When the nights start to get a little colder and the sun sets earlier, I highly recommend pouting a cup of tea or hot apple cider and listening to Tchaikovsky’s Autumn.
Fun fact: September was declared Classical Music Month by then-President, Bill Clinton. So, why not just jump into a curated Classical Autumn playlist. The work is done for you, and this one is great!
September 15th kicks off Hispanic Heritage Month, as well. Joaquín Rodrigo, a Hispanic composer, wrote Fantasía para un Gentilhombre originally as a concerto for guitar and orchestra. While the original is, of course, incredible, I first learned of this piece when I stumbled upon this arrangement created for flute and orchestra by Sir James Galway. (The man who single-handedly influenced me to first learn the flute.) When I first heard it, I listened to it on repeat for an abnormal amount of time and immediately bought the sheet music to start learning it.
EXTENSION ACTIVITIES:
An apple stem activity would pair perfectly with our September apple songs. I love this suggested Apple Science Experiment from Lessons 4 Little Ones.
Once those leaves start falling, take the kiddos for a walk and collect a few! (Take them for a walk even if the leaves aren’t falling too, of course!) Preschool Steam has tons of great leaf activities including an easy how-to for achieving great Textured Leaf Rubbings.
