October 2025 – Music Moments

Crunchy leaves, howling wind, jack-o-lanterns lighting up front porch steps – October has arrived! I’m a huge fan of this magical month. With each passing year, I find myself enjoying the rhythm of the seasons more and more. (Rhythm! Get it?!) Maybe that makes me sound old, but oh well! It’s nice to be able to find the joy in the passing of time!

🎵 Looking Back: Favorite October Songs

In last year’s October blog, Music Moments: October 2024, I shared some of our favorite preschool fall songs perfect for circle time, transitions, and seasonal fun. If you missed it, definitely check it out!

And don’t forget- our YouTube channel has new kids’ music videos uploaded weekly, so there’s always fresh content for your classroom or home.

What I’d like to highlight this month, though, is movement! In every Little Kiddos Music class and lesson, movement is a key component. Sprinkling movement breaks throughout is essential and so beneficial!

Movement breaks are critical in early childhood learning. They help children:

  • Release energy and refocus
  • Strengthen motor skills and coordination
  • Build body awareness and rhythm
  • Experience joy through active play

I could write a whole post just on the benefits of movement in preschool music education (and I will soon!). For now, let’s dive into some of our newest movement song favorites.

(Teachers – these work beautifully as quick “brain breaks” in between structured activities!)

Now, back to the season at hand and some October MUSIC APPRECIATION and listening suggestions that I’m especially excited about!

FOR EARS OF ALL AGES:
I’m a huge fan of using movie soundtracks as a way to engage little learners with classical music. Soundtracks make a movie! Ever mute an especially scary part of a film and suddenly feel the fear and suspense completely and suddenly disappear? Movie scores tell the story in the most intense and profound way. For October, I highly recommend listening to Garden of Magic/Thackery Follows Emily from the Hocus Pocus soundtrack by James Horner. It’s whimsical and exciting!

As for writing unbeatable movie scores, no one can touch the one and only John Williams. Harry Potter is a twinkly, magical tune for the season.

I recently heard Autumn Waltz by Yukiko Nishimura. I’m obsessed. It’s delicious. It really does sound like waltzing through a leaf-carpeted path.

As the nights get dark earlier, here’s a couple of especially cozy tunes waiting for you. When October Goes, but make it choral! So gorgeous!

Falling Leaves by Frankie Carle makes me want to slow dance cheek-to-cheek in the kitchen.

To end, we’ll completely change up the vibe! In honor of Día de Muertos, listen to Calaverita by La Santa Cecilia. It is such an upbeat celebration of the lives of those who have passed.

EXTENSION ACTIVITIES:
To get extra creative with a carved pumpkin, make an Erupting Pumpkin. Put a little baking soda, vinegar and food coloring in a bowl inside your carved pumpkin, It will definitely add a spooky, STEM experience to your carving afternoon!

Ooey-Gooey Halloween Slime would be such a big hit – especially if you add some plastic googly eyeballs or spiders!
