February 2026 – Music Moments
Despite being the shortest month, the winter gray and cold can sometimes make February drag on and on. Here, in the Pacific Northwest, a lot of people either plan a trip to – or dream of a – visit to sunny places this time of year.
While no tropical weather is coming my way anytime soon, we enjoyed a stretch of dry, cold, and SUNNY weather in January – always a treat. But I know it’s just a tease and the great Seattle gray will envelope us for probably a couple more months. I’m a lifelong PNW-er though and don’t usually mind it though!
This winter is a little extra cozy and hunkered down, as I’m spending countless hours at the computer focused on post-production for the Little Kiddos Video Curriculum. 370+ video clips are being lovingly edited to build the forty classes soon coming your way. To say I’m excited to share it with you all is an understatement!
But regardless of the weather or various endeavors, February music classes are, of course, underway and full of fun!
Little Kiddos Music this month is full of silly songs, friendship themes, and expressive movement as we explore love, kindness, and feelings.
Our preschool music classes and curricula focus on helping children connect emotionally while developing rhythm, listening skills, and body awareness — all wrapped up in playful, engaging songs.
Valentine’s Day & Friendship Songs for Preschoolers 💕
February is the perfect time to sing about friendship and love — especially with lovebird songs that preschoolers absolutely adore.
Some class favorites include:
🎵Two Little Lovebirds
🎵Five Little Lovebirds
These songs celebrate friendship, love, and big feelings in a developmentally appropriate way.
We also sing the classic:
🎵Skidamarinkadinkadink — always a hit, especially the dramatic “mooooon” part (it gets them every year!)
New Valentine’s Day Movement & Drum Songs for Kids 🕺💌
🎵 Valentine’s Day Is Coming Real Soon!
This full-body movement song is perfect for getting those candy-heart wiggles out. It ends with a calming moment to help preschoolers recenter and bring their energy back down.
🎵 Friendship & Valentine’s Day Drum Song
We love using this song to celebrate friendship while practicing rhythm skills and motor skills through different ways of playing our drums.r hands-on learning and movement.
Winter Music Activities for Preschoolers ❄️
Since February is still very much winter, we’re enjoying some fun seasonal music activities:
🎵 Winter Rhythm Rhyme
This playful movement activity helps children connect rhythm and rhyme with winter motion.
🎵 Tap the Icicles
We pretend our rhythm sticks are icicles, tapping along to steady beats and patterns.
Music Appreciation for FOR EARS OF ALL AGES:
February brings us some great themes for music appreciation! We’ve got Valentine’s Day, Black History Month, as well as the Winter Olympics this year!
🎧 Adiagetto, Symphony No. 5 – Gustav Mahler
Often considered a love letter to his wife, this movement is a beautiful way to introduce tempo and emotion in music.I describe Adagio to kiddos as “slow and smooth — like creamy peanut butter.”
This Adagietto is slightly more up-tempo, but still laidback and oh-so rich, creamy, and delicious. Watching Leonard Bernstein conduct is also a treat!
🎧 At Last – Etta James
Not only do we celebrate love in February, but it is also Black History Month, and the iconic song At Last by Etta James is the perfect way to honor both.
“Life is like a song” — sigh. Her rendition is an absolutely soul-filled, swirly-stringed, sublime treat for the ears.
Do yourself a favor and also listen to the 1942 Glenn Miller version, which helped make this song (written by Mack Gordon and Harry Warren) popular.
Winter Olympics Music & STEAM Connections 🏅🎶
With the Winter Olympics starting this month, it’s the perfect time to listen to:
🎧 Fanfare for the Common Man – Aaron Copland
This powerful piece just feels Olympic. I first heard it at youth symphony camp, held on a former military base along the shores of the Salish Sea. After long rehearsals, we’d walk to the beach, climb sandy cliffs, and watch the sunset. This piece will always bring those epic memories to mind.
Fun fact: It debuted at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics!
February STEM & STEAM Activities for Preschoolers
🎵 STEAM + Movement Combo Activity
🎧 The Skater’s Waltz – Johann Strauss
Put on The Skater’s Waltz by Johann Strauss and have kiddos “skate” around the room using paper plates under their feet. (It’s also fun to watch the performance by André Rieu’s orchestra — so fancy and formal!)
❤️ Heart-Themed STEM Challenge
This resource has wonderful Valentine’s Day STEM ideas for young children. One of the most versatile is having kiddos (even the littlest!) build the shape of a heart out of various materials. So many possibilities!
Building heart shapes with different materials is:
❤️Open-ended
❤️Accessible for even the littlest learners
❤️Great for creativity and problem-solving
❄️ Winter Olympic–Inspired STEM Activities
Try these fun, hands-on ideas:
❄️Hockey Stick Angles: Craft sticks, plastic straws or brooms can hit pom-poms or a ball into a goal (cup, bucket, cardboard box, toy bin, laundry basket…!). Without even knowing it, kiddos are exploring angles and deflection.
❄️Mini Ski Jump: Build ramps and measure jump distances. You can use play train tracks, cardboard, craft sticks, couch cushions…you name it! Have toys make the ‘jump’ and then measure for distance!
❄️Bobsled Design: Create small sleds with paper plates, cardboard, foil, straws, etc. and test speed and aerodynamics.
These activities blend hands-on learning, winter STEAM exploration, and seasonal sensory play, making them ideal for February lesson plans or home learning! They’re a perfect pairing to our Little Kiddos Music fun.
