December 2025 – Music Moments

Happy December to you and yours! (aka — the most magical time of the year layered over the “season of chaos” where we’re all trying to create holiday magic and hold onto our sanity). December is beautiful… and busy… and full of opportunities to bring more music, movement, and hands-on learning to your little ones.

If you’ve followed Little Kiddos Music Academy for a bit, you know I admitted in my December 2024 post that I am a full-on Christmas music junkie. I adore this season. Joy seems bigger, everything sparkles, and best of all — December and festive music is everywhere. My heart is full.

Since I write these blogs ahead of time (on my best months!), I may not have uploaded all my new winter music for preschoolers just yet. But chances are good the Little Kiddos Winter Playlist has fresh additions by the time you’re reading this.

Now let’s jump into this month’s December preschool music activities, including movement songs, winter listening ideas, and simple seasonal STEM fun.

Move — December Movement Songs for Preschoolers

These kid-friendly winter movement songs are perfect for circle time, classroom transitions, brain breaks, and at-home wiggle relief during the holiday season. Each one builds coordination, rhythm, and joyful holiday energy.

🎵 Clap Your Hands, Stomp Your Feet

Great for practicing steady beat and big body movements.

🎵 Dance Like Snowflakes

A calm, floating movement song ideal for early childhood winter units.

🎵 Winter Cheer

Upbeat, fun, and perfect for December classroom dance parties.

🎵 Up Are the Clouds

Grab scarves or tissues—fantastic for cross-body movement and sensory play.

These songs support gross motor development, rhythm practice, sensory exploration, and winter-themed dramatic play — all while keeping little bodies moving on long, chilly December days.

FOR EARS OF ALL AGES:

These December listening selections are wonderful for music appreciation, calm-down moments, imaginative storytelling, and helping children (and the children inside all of us!) hear contrasts in tempo, dynamics, and musical styles.

🎧 Vivaldi’s Winter — Modern Remix

I love a new take on an old classic. This version of Winter from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons by Max Richter holds very true to the original but with a modern take. Honestly, a lot of people won’t hear a difference, but there is added modernity in this remake. This one is perfect for teaching “fast vs. slow” (better yet: “presto vs. largo”) and “quiet vs. loud.” (“pianissimo vs. forte”).

🎧 Chopin’s Winter Wind

Starts softly like falling snow… then swirls into a musical blizzard! Kids love acting this one out with scarves or ribbons.

🎧 Sleigh Ride — Boston Pops

A must-listen December classic featuring bright brass and playful rhythms. Great for beat-keeping activities. Plus, when that bumpin’ brass section gets all sorts of jazzy, you can’t help but groove a little (or a lot).

🎧 Schelomo — Ernest Bloch

A rich, dramatic cello piece that inspires storytelling and emotional expression. Written in 1916, this piece is part of Ernest Bloch’s “Jewish Cycle” – in which he explored his Jewish identity. It’s dramatic and, at times, even mystical sounding.  Many kiddos think it sounds like a movie score.

🎧 Winter Wonderland — Louis Armstrong

Smooth, warm, mellow perfection from one of my favorite musicians ever.

STEM — December STEM & STEAM Activities for Preschoolers

Even though most outdoor gardening sleeps through December, there are still plenty of hands-on winter STEM activities perfect for early learners!

🌱 Grow an Avocado Pit (Indoor Winter Gardening for Kids)

A simple, slow, magical science observation activity — perfect for cold months and curious preschoolers.

🔔 Dancing Jingle Bells — Holiday STEAM Activity

I’m all for incorporating a little musical instrument into a December STEAM activity. Make jingle bells magically dance with this festive preschool science experiment.

🍭 Dissolving Candy Canes Experiment (Easy December Science)

A simple winter science activity using candy canes — because there are always extra candy canes!

These activities blend hands-on learning, winter STEAM exploration, and seasonal sensory play, making them ideal for December lesson plans or home learning!
