September 2024 – Music Moments

School. Leaves. Apples. Pumpkin Spice everything?! September is the start of a season for the senses, for sure!

September Music Activities

Little Kiddos Music classes are packed with fall and leaf-themed fun for the month of September. I highly encourage taking a look-see at my Fall highlights on Instagram. So many quick, fun songs to do! Many are featured during our music classes this month. Perhaps the biggest crowd pleaser? The Leaves on The Trees.

FOR EARS OF ALL AGES:

September – Obviously, I had to include this one! Of course the orginal is by Earth, Wind and Fire. When kiddos hear either version they may shout Trolls! In music classes, we often use this song (as close to the 21st night of September as possible!) for freeze-dance, with keeping a steady beat or playing ostinati on rhythm instruments or just rockin’ out with scarves, a parachute or bubbles.

Fall, Four Seasons – Again, a must-listen for the month of September. Officially, Concerto No. 3 in F major, Op. 8, RV 293 Autumn (L’autunno) – the strings (violin solos throughout) really carry this well-known piece. A fun active/movement way for the kiddos to experience it?! Vivaldi’s Autumn Fall Scarf Movement Video from Music with Mr. Reyna is perfection!

September 15th is the start of Hispanic Heritage Month. Kiddos may love to hear music they recognize such as Coco – the instrumental version features, gorgeous guitar licks and happy brass. Speaking of guitar, if you don’t know the contemporary, incredible percussive playing of Rodrigo y Gabriela – check them out! Lastly, Santana’s Oye Como Va is a remake of the 1962 cha-cha-cha song by Tito Puenta and is all about listening to how the ryhythm goes…

Of course, living in the PNW, I often listen to Singing in the Rain in September. The scene from the movie is fun to show kiddos too! (Just be prepared for serious dancing and splashing in rain puddles next time they’re outside in the rain.) But perhaps my favorite song to listen to during the month of September, especially on a rainy day, is September in the Rain by Dinah Washington. I LOVE including OLD music in Little Kiddos Music classes. This one just begs for scarf-dancing or ADAGIO movement to catching bubbles. Dinah Washington’s voice accompanied by the gorgeous strings just FEELS like fall. Cozy blanket, a good book and apple cider, anyone?

EXTENSION ACTIVITIES:

Friends Art Lab is at it again. Chances are real good, that I’ll be sending you there way nearly every month! Can you imagine a better activity on a crisp Sunday afternoon than listening to Vivaldi’s Fall movement from the Four Seasons while making Two-Ingredient Pumpkin Dough with your kiddo? Perfect pairing if you ask me. Check out this adorable Fall Tree Art too!

While it’s not Halloween yet, it feels a little like spooky season with all the spiders that are suddenly appearing. (Not a fan!) But, we might as well embrace spider season with a science spider ice activity for kids from the one and only Susie of Busy Toddler.
